Common Rugby Injuries

Toe Fracture

Overview

A toe fracture is caused by trauma to the bone. Trauma can result from:

Ankle Sprain

Overview

A sprain involves damage to a ligament. In a mild injury, the ligament may only be stretched, resulting in microscopic injury to the ligament. In a more severe sprain, the ligament may actually tear or rupture.

Ankle Fracture

Overview

The three ankle bones are:

  •  tibia (shin bone)
the main bone of the lower leg that runs along the inside of the leg

  •  fibula
the smaller bone of the lower leg that runs along the outside of the leg

  •  talus (ankle bone)
the bone that provides the connection between the leg and the foot .

Meniscal Tear

Overview

Most injuries to the meniscus are caused by trauma, usually compression and twisting of the knee. Movements that can cause trauma to the knee include pivoting, cutting, and decelerating. Because aging tends to break down the inner tissues of the meniscus, minor trauma (such as squatting) can injure the meniscus in an older person.

PCL injuries

Overview

The PCL and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) limit the motion of the tibia backward and forward, respectively. The lateral collateral ligament (on the outside of the knee) and the medial collateral ligament (on the inside of the knee) limit side-to-side knee motion.

Finger Dislocation

Overview

A dislocated finger is caused by:

  •  a jamming force applied to the end of the finger
  •  finger being forcefully twisted or bent
  •  finger being overextended
