It focuses on:

• Ball Skills.

• Support Lines And Angles.

• Timing Onto The Ball.

• Rugby Specific Fitness.

Session Plan:

Warm Up  15 minutes | Drills 25 minutes  | Play Simulation 25 minutes| Warm Down 10 minutes

Warm Up:  Equipment: Bags, Balls & Cones | Time: 15 minutes

Middle Pop Drill @ 5 min, start with one ball then add in a second half way through at the 3 min mark to increase speed into the center of the grid and communication.

Hand Off Channel @ 5 min, work in pods of 3 – 4, once the player has handed off they must look to off load. If tackle bags are not available get players to stand static in the channel.

Hit & Spin Channel @ 5 min,  work in pods of 3 – 4, once the player has handed off they must look to off load. If tackle bags are not available get players to stand static in the channel.

Greg Commins's tip:The key about continuity is keeping the ball in a good position when approaching and entering the contact area. Ensure players are carrying the ball in the correct arm away from the contact area and have a solid base with foot close to the contact point when working out of the hit.

 Drills:

Equipment: Cones & Balls | Time: 25 minutes

Channel 2 defenders plus short quick pass  @ 10min, work in groups of 6-8 players, ensure communication is loud and clear and depth of support. Players should aim to pass twice once passing the defenders and work the ball back inside quickly.Rest 2min 30sec

Channel group draw to the side plus inside pop @ 10min, work in groups of 6-8 players, ensure communication is loud and clear and depth of support. Players must step to the side to “DRAW” the defender then a quick pop inside. The tempo should be high and players must work hard onto the ball.Rest 2min 30sec.

Greg Commins's tip:Depth and communication are vital during this drill. Players must never be ½ paced when hitting the ball they must run onto it full tilt. All players must have their hands up ready for the pop when running onto the ball and their hands should be “soft” meaning using a simple pop pass = easy catch.

Play Simulation:  Equipment: Balls & Body Armour | Time: 25 minutes

Play Simulation Drill  You can use 7v 7; 10 v 10; 15 v 15  what ever your numbers will allow you to play. The key is to incorporate all the drills that you have worked on leading up to this stage of practice. Change possession every 5 minutes as it is important for each team to have the ball for a lengthy period of time to practice keeping possession and work on their continuity. Rest for 1-2 minutes between sets and have a quick water break so players can regroup and discuss what they need to work on during the next set.

 Warm Down:

Equipment: 2m Rope, but if not available can work with a partner to assist.  | Time 10 minutes

Assisted Hamstring @ 30 sec each side.

Lying Quad @ 30 sec each side.

Assisted Calf @ 30 sec each side.

>

Assisted Glute @ 30 sec each side.

Assisted Groin @ 30 sec each side.

Greg Commins's tip:Never forget the stretch! Rugby is a physical sport and your body needs the regeneration of a good stretch post practice to boost recovery.

I use a lot of this in my training sessions with the u16s.
Check out my session titled Reaction, Decision Making and Handling Drills for a good take on increasing reaction times, which will lead to better continuity.
